Valentina Colussi
Operations Team

What’s your role Valentina?

Hello! I’m in the Operations Team. I onboard and issue new contracts to associates, I prepare new statements of work for clients and I manage our CRM system. I am also in charge of our facilities and slowly getting into the Marketing side of the company.

So what’s a typical day like?

I’m mainly based in the office in Holborn. Everyday is different, depending on who is around and what I need to get done. Normally, I would start making sure that all the new engagements are in place and contractors are doing fine. I would then carry on my day completing and drafting new paperwork and attending Operations, Resource or Marketing meetings.

What’s your favourite thing about your team?

I love the fact that it feels like a family to me. I walk in and I know that I am talking to people who are more friends than colleagues and that they are there for the same reasons as me, support the company’s values and always striving for the best. I feel at home and the whole team has different backgrounds, which is useful if you want to learn/improve new skills. The team is constantly growing, which makes the whole experience even more exciting.

What’s been your most memorable moment?

In general, all the team bonding events are memorable. From Friday lunches to Social Events and Summer Party, to Daemon Days – they are a great opportunity to get to know people and to socialise.

Joe Major
Analyst Consultant

What is your role Joe?

As a recent graduate I’m being given the chance to have a go at a few different roles. A few months ago I was doing front-end development for a new Daemon project, TaskDaemon, but I’m currently on my first client placement in a DevOps role. I’m helping our team quickly deploy, test and release their code to the wider business and into production.

So what’s a typical day like?

It’s a bit of a cliché, but every day is different! I might spend one day troubleshooting production issues and the next developing pipeline improvements to help the team get their code out the business and allowing them to focus on their job: writing code! If there’s one thing for certain it’s that I have to come to work ready to think on my feet. Six months in and I’m still learning something new every day.

What’s your favourite thing about your team?

My favourite thing about our team is that we all bring a positive attitude to work with us. Even when the pressure is on we find a way to have a laugh, which helps keep us motivated. And although we work on a client site I still feel like a part of a bigger Daemon team: there are always people available to help with any issues, technical or personal. There are plenty of chances to meet up with the broader team as well, at meetups or the monthly socials.

What’s been your most memorable moment?

I think my first ‘Daemon Day’ has to be one of the most memorable moments. Since so many people work with clients it was exciting to finally get to meet all my colleagues in one place and start getting to know people outside of a regular working context. To be honest, every Daemon Day is exciting in its own way. There are new faces every time and it’s cool to see what everyone else is working on and see how we’re developing as a company.

Isabel O'Sullivan
Developer

What’s your role Isabel?

I’m a Developer focusing mainly on Java but I usually get to work with a variety of different languages and technologies which I love. It is actually one of the main reasons I decided to join Daemon. I’m currently working on-site at the Home Office where we are using lots of new and exciting tech!

So what’s a typical day like?

Each morning my team starts the day with a stand-up allowing us to get an idea of everyone's progress in the sprint or to air any issues we may be facing. Then I pull any new changes into my branch and get to work on my Jira tickets. Once a week we have a planning meeting but otherwise I have a good amount of freedom to monitor my time and get what I need to coded, tested and pushed for QA testing.

What’s your favourite thing about your team?

I’m a very sociable and chatty person so for me there is nothing worse than working in an office or company where everyone only communicates via email. I feel there should be a social aspect to your work day too. My team are so friendly and approachable, there is always someone who is happy to help or bounce ideas off of.

What’s been your most memorable moment?

On my first day, I sat down with Guy, the Account Manager for the HO, to have an introduction and discuss getting me on-site. He asked me where I wanted to go with my career and what he could do to help me get there. I knew from that moment that Daemon was where I wanted to be. Working at a company that cares as much about your development as its own really makes a difference to me. Since starting at Daemon in Jan 2019 I have built new skills and I feel like I get to learn on the job everyday and that makes what I do even more enjoyable.

Ian Ta
DevOps Engineer

What’s your role Ian?

I work as a consultant based at Sainsbury's Holborn operating as part of a team to ensure the development and support of their Digital services. Alongside my client role, I like to get involved in initiatives at Daemon that help the business grow.

So what’s a typical day like?

I try and get to the office on bike when possible. Anything to avoid the Tube. My day starts in the office at around 08:30, I check my emails for anything urgent and reply to anything that only needs a quick response. I go and grab a shower followed by breakfast from the canteen and bring it back to my desk. I’ll usually check Slack for anything that needs my attention. I’ll then go about planning my day; what the priority for the team is at the moment, what’s on my to-do list for the day. As the morning rolls on, there are always queries/issues that hit the team so I will gather what information I can for discussion at our daily standups. After running through our board at standup, it’s coffee time. It’s an important ritual for the team to step away from our desks and talk about life outside of work. We’re a team that mostly eat at our desks during the week (unless it’s Friday Lunch) so taking this time out is well worth while. Over lunch I will head over to the Daemon office to see who is around, catch up, and ask any questions in person about anything I may be working on. Late morning and afternoon are a mixture of development and team management tasks. Issues that require the team’s attention need to be assigned out and potentially worked on with urgency. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a wide breadth of knowledge in the team, but more importantly a group with an interminable work ethic. This gives myself and the team a platform to learn new things.

What’s your favourite thing about your team?

A core part of the Daemon culture for me is to support each other and to be fair in what we do. Everyone has a voice and we make time to listen to each other. Being based round the corner from Daemon HQ, I frequently pop by for work related catch ups or just to socialise. The importance of our culture is recognised throughout the team and the value that socialising, whether that's as a team lunch or as a social activity brings.

What’s been your most memorable moment?

Within a couple of months of starting, one of the team who I wasn't working directly with at the time made extra effort to help me settle in and support my efforts to learn. I recognised something selfless which stood out for me and made me realise I am part of a like-minded group. I now look to pass that on, hoping anyone new to the business will feel welcome to the team.
